Building a Hoop House

We purchased a used hoop house two years ago, an opportunity we knew would be foolish to pass up, given the reasonable asking price and proximity of the selling location to our farm. At the time of the purchase, there was no urgency to put together the hoop house, and so all the parts were unloaded into one of our buildings where they waited patiently to fulfill their purpose…until recently.

Since this winter has been fairly mild, we decided March would be a fine time to start putting up the hoop house. The ground was workable, so we gathered up a few family members and got to work. The tricky part was remembering where everything went, but the pieces began falling into place pretty quickly after we laid everything out.

Hoop houses serve a variety of purposes, with one of the most important being the ability to extend the growing season. Even a simple hoop house without heat can provide ample greens through the winter in our parts of New York. Unfortunately, a hoop house is not without its issues (pest overload, humidity issues, temperature control, etc.), but as with anything else, being well educated and using best practices can help manage these issues.

We are so excited to start using the hoop house in the seasons to come. Stay tuned for updates!
